Smitten with mittens.

Lucky for me, I'm not the only one in my family who enjoys beading. At Christmas there is usually one gift made of beads. This year my aunt and cousin made each family a beaded mitten ornament.

I'm going to take a short blog break and will see you in the new year.

More stockings.

Here's the last of the stockings.

In my recovery news, the PICC line did come out yesterday. I worried and worried about what it would be like for it to come out and it was no big deal. The nurse asked me to look away, take in a deep breath, let it out forcefully, and when I finished she was holding the PICC line in her hand - I didn't feel a thing! I think the worst thing about it was the tape holding it in place. The tape pulled on my skin and gave me a blister, it itched, and was generally uncomfortable all the time. But, it's worth it to get rid of the infection.

Being back at work yesterday was exhausting. I was sleeping by about 7 p.m.! Maybe my stamina will have improved for today.

Stockings.

Everyone brought their stockings yesterday so I could take some photos. These are the stockings my mom has made so far for my brothers' families.

This is the only stocking that she done (or has been able to find) in crewel.

As for me, today the PICC line is coming out! Yippee! On Monday I finally had a positive doctor's appointment where everything looks like it's healing. That was the best Christmas present I could have received.

Today is my first day back at work, so I'd better get to it!

Gingerbread houses and snowflakes and a train.

Look at this gingerbread house N. made in his 1st grade class! I love the little pathway. He was very proud that he was the only one to think to put in a sidewalk made of Smarties. If you look behind the snowman on the right you will see a few marshmallows lying down - that's actually a "melted down snowman." He puts a lot of thought into his projects. Actually, I was surprised there was any frosting on the gingerbread house, considering the amount that was on his shirt when he came home from school.

After about thirty pictures of this ornament, I finally have one I share. And even this photo's not great. It was a tough one. Anyway, my mom, aunt, and I got together one year to make beaded ornaments and decided to make this one, which was published in an issue of Bead & Button. Sadly, their site seems be having some trouble and I'm too lazy to go look for the exact issue it was in. It's made with Swarovski crystal, seed beads, and bugle beads.

This is a snowflake ornament my cousin Amy made. I believe the pattern for this was in either Bead & Button or Beadwork.

And, for our final ornament of the day, we have a train my mom made for N. last year. It's a Mill Hill kit.

We're going to go brave Target now. It's scary to go there the weekend before Christmas.

Vintage Filigree Bracelet.

Taking a small break from Christmas ornaments and stockings to show you something I finished while recuperating.

This bracelet is from a Cynthia Rutledge workshop called Vintage Filigree Bracelet.

This is actually my third one. The first one I made did not fit, so my mom has it. Cynthia was gracious enough to sell me another kit so I could make one for me. I made the main bracelet part with different thread than what came in the kit. Big mistake. Big. When I got to the part where I could start working on the clasps (the fringed looking ends), beads started breaking all over the place because the thread was too thick for several passes.

So frustrating! Grr! I had to cut the entire thing apart and start over. So, I've essentially made this bracelet three times, but only have two bracelets to show for it.

Recovery update: My doctor has decided I should have at least 14 days on the antibiotic rather than seven. I always knew seven was a long shot. A girl can dream. Now this girl is dreaming that the PICC line can come out on December 26. I'm feeling really good these days. No pain at all when I'm up and about, much more energy, and generally feeling back to normal. It is still uncomfortable when Mark packs the wound left from the infection, but that's to be expected.

My mom has made nearly all of our immediate family members Christmas stockings. She usually makes one or two each year. Some are in needlepoint, some in crewel, and some in counted cross stitch. I know some of her friends have asked her to make them one, but she can't even keep up with her expanding family!

Here are our stockings. Mark's is made in counted cross stitch.

This one she made for me when I was younger. It's counted cross stitch and embroidery.

We are so lucky to have these keepsakes. Each one has either "Love Mom" or "Love Mimah" (for the grand kids) along with the year she made it. I will try to get pictures of the ones she's made for my brothers' families and my aunt's family.

It's snowing pretty hard here right now, but I think we are only supposed to have three inches when all is said and done.

It's a good day to stay indoors and wrap presents...

...while enjoying a Pixie alongside a cup of hot chocolate in my latest favorite cup, given to me by my friend Jenn.

Today my baby is 7 years old.

I'm still struck by the same sense of wonder I felt when I first saw him. We are so blessed to have him in our lives.

I think we're going out to dinner tonight to celebrate. N. has requested we go to a restaurant where they will sing to him. The small pleasures are the best.

Snow and ice.

We have ice and snow coming down here. It's a good day to post a beaded snowflake. This pattern was published by Sage Zering in Bead & Button magazine. The pattern is also available for purchase online.

In the ongoing saga of my recovery, they found that the type of infection I have does not respond to the type of antibiotic I was taking. For this type of infection, only IV antibiotics will work. So, I had to go to the hospital yesterday to have a PICC line put in. Twice a day I have to inject a syringe of antibiotic into the PICC. Right now I have a 7-day supply of antibiotic. Let's hope that's all I need. This needs to work so I can be finished with the infection and get the wound healed!

Seriously.

Painted ornaments.

These ornaments are a fun a simple project that I did a few years ago. I bought some clear glass ball ornaments, poured in some acrylic paint, swirled it around, turned them upside down to dry for several days, and... voila! Pretty ornaments!

Today is N.'s birthday party day. This year he said to me, "Mommy, I really like having family birthday parties, but this year could I please have one with kids?" My boy is growing up! Today is a kid party day at a place with lots of room to run around and jump on things. He should be good and tired by tonight!

As far as my recovery goes, I'm doing pretty well. I've had some more problems with the infection, but it's being treated and I'm feeling better each day.

I thought I'd be getting a lot more beading done while recuperating than I actually am. But, I'm working on something complex. I'll try to take a few pictures...maybe tomorrow...

Today I just feel like napping all day.

In honor of our first snowfall in Chicagoland, I thought I'd share this beaded snowflake ornament. This is from a Martha Stewart craft kit that I bought many years ago. It sat in my closet until last year when my cousin said she was looking for a project. I handed her the kit and off she went.

This makes me want a mug of hot chocolate. I'm off to the kitchen!

December.

Looks like December here in the Chicagoland area will start out with snow. We have some winter storm warnings in effect. I'm hoping the weather isn't too bad because we have people coming over tonight.

Mark and N. put up the tree last weekend, so I have some beaded ornaments to share with you this month. The first is this Santa ornament, made of cross stitch and beads. It's a Mill Hill kit that I did several years ago.

I'm feeling pretty good today. Still some tenderness, but so far I haven't needed to take any of my prescribed pain medication; just a little Advil. Yesterday was our 11-year wedding anniversary. I felt up to going out to lunch with Mark to celebrate. I had to take a nap when we got home, but still, I made it out into the world! It won't be long now...
